Great tour if you are interested in happened in Paris during the Second World War Chris knows his stuff and provides lots of interesting details. He took extra time to talk about topics I was most interested and then sent us follow up text with a video to watch. Thanks Chris

Chris knows and it is highly appasionate about the history of World War II. If you want to know what happened during this period of time in Paris and France, this is your tour. It was like a college level class. Chris was very kind and I love that he was not constrain by time. The information was so rich that we stayed 2 extra hours! Very generous from Chris, a person who loves to share all what he has been studying for years. Take the tour without hesitation.

Chris is no regular tour guide and this is no regular tour! But if WW2 history is your thing, you are in for a treat. Chris is knowledgeable ( understatement) on his subject, he peppers the detail with stories, evidence, photos, posters, maps, books…. I’m still processing it all. He brings a unique voice and perspective and though I know a bit about the subject, Chris encourages his tours to think a bit differently than the accepted narrative which is wonderful. To the victor the spoils, Chris shows you how the way history is written in retrospect may not tell the full story. It’s intriguing and thought provoking. Highly recommended

We booked a tour with Chris in June 2024. It has been one of the highlight of our stay in Paris. If we could, we would give Chris 6 stars. He was soo knowledgeable and a good story teller. We enjoyed the 4 1/2 hours of the tour.
It is more than just a normal tour. Chris is explaining in detail the occupation and brings in very interesting details that we never knew about. Learning about the events of war while being in the location they happened and seeing photos really help us to immerse ourself.
No doubt, we would book again for a good page of history with Chris!!

Wow, thank you guys so much for your kind words, they are what really makes evrything worthwhile for me
I wish you'd put your name as I only have a number on the review so I could write personally via email as well?
I'm guessing I know who you are though by the length of the tour that day !
Just so anyone readng this knows the tour is not actually scheduled for 4.5 hrs of course , I say around 3 hrs BUT as I have also said I am flexible and do not clock watch, If my guests are interested and want to spend more time then I am nearly always available if they have questions or want to just sit and chat more during the tour
Its Important to me that they go away understanding this complex subject better
So I am always happy to spend extra time with people if they want as on this day I enjoy nothing more than the company of people on my tour who are eager to learn and have their interest piqued by what we discuss and see new perspectives
Thats why I started running tours in the first place to share my passion and knoweldge for history and to help people learn that the oast teaches us so much aboyt the present vand future so we should always remeber amnd leran from its lessons that are STILL relevant today
Thank you guys again, I am going to send you a message privately , I hope Its who I think it is but it was a pleasure to share your company as well and for you to find my sense of humour funny too!
Just so evreryone knows PLEASE let me know before the tour IF you do have a certain set time you need to finish by , as I said I am flexible so it Is always possible that our tour could go on longer if people wish or have a lot of questions or on the ither hand we can also finish in under 3hrs too if thats what you prefer

We enjoyed this tour and learned a lot. Chris really knows his topic! I was a bit disappointed that we really didn't walk much so it was really more of a standing lecture than a walking tour. Nonetheless, we were impressed. If you really want to delve into the details of the German occupation then this is the tour for you.

Thanks for taking the tour with me, and your compliments
Every tour can be different, It depends on the group and the people and how many questions they ask
The area as I describe has a group of very important sites CLOSE together and this is deliberately WHY we meet there
The story of the occupation in Paris cannit be told in just one site or olace, it took place all over the city and i could meet people in 20 different places and do a tour in it with them
But the area we meet in allows us to get an overview on BOTH the German and French sides if the occupation without the need to walk far
So some tours we walk more and see more "sites" some less , It depends on the guests level if interest and orevious knowledge It can be a difficult balance bcause I like to answer fully and often I get asked questions that require some time to explain properly because there are so many misconcepetions and false narratives about the history of France during the occupation than ANY other period in iTs history that people will take a tour on
It is easily THE most difficult and complex subject to explain properly in a tour of a few hours that you take a tour about in Paris
You simply cannot understand this subject by spending 10 mins at each site and visiting 20 sites
I try to get us to between 6-10 important sites Per tour but its ture if people really get into the questioning It will be a struggle to get beyond 6 sites
I could run a tour hwere you will come away visiting 15 sites with ia list of where and whens but no deep context and the myths STILL intact
This for many of my guests on the tours surprise is not a simple tale at all, a tale of just the good and bad guys , there are multiple nuances and layers in the story of both the French and German side of the occupation and the internal conflicts and moral dilemnas that we have to consider and can ONLY understand If i take the time to explain fully the factors involved
For example I am currently In Berlin and there are multiple tours on the Third Reich here of course but the subject here is also totally different and far far simpler to explain from that of France ,an occupied country considered below the Aryan race ideal but still a "higher race" of Franco-Germanic origin where the dynamics where totally different
Unlike Germany post war, France had NO equivalent of its De Nazification program and was not divided into zones under military governership
The ORIGIANAL allied plan WAS for a miiltary Governership untill it was READY for the re-establishment of the democractic process and the clean sweeping of the poltical landscape but this NEVER happened
Instead it was left in the hand of the French themselves
It like leaving your cat at home in charge of your mouse !
DeGaulle . Anglophobic and out of poltical excpediency and the need for France to be part of the "winners" post war and re-established as a world power intact with it, colonies created a myth that is STILL prevalent amongst people today that became sacralised into French society much like a religion has Its articles of faith you should not feel comfortable to challenge
Nowbecause if this even though It is FINALLY CHANGING For 50 years, the French state EFFECTIVELY tried to cover up the truth and had a cencorship program that was at times worthy of Putin or Eastern European cold war dictaorship rather then a democratic Western Government
This led to MANY ex members of the governing regime during the occupation reintergarating into politics post war and rising to positions of great power and it was in their interests to muddy the waters of what went on during the occupation
The true nature of the "French " resistance " was also written our of history in favour of a narrative that put nationalism chauvanism amd Militarism front and centre becsaue this was what was "neccessary" for France to hear and believe after the war in the view of those in power
Honestly, unravelling all this and finding the truth IS possible BUT its like a ball of string and takes time
I myself want to visit as many sites as possible but it is also my greater responsibility if I am asked certain questions to help people understand the whole truth in a factual , contextual but non judgmeantal way and this CAN take time
Sometimes after realising this some of my guests who this is creating a lot of questions actually specifically ask that we split the tour In half and get a drink and sit for some time so they can ask me whatever questions they want and I can anser fully and I'm happy to do this too
Biut I am aware of this issue and In fact Ihave actually just changed the meeting place and the suggested Itinerary slightly to what I think and hope will make it easier for us to move a little quicker and see some more sites as I DO really want to get you to see asand UNDERSTAND as much as possible

Don't expect to go to all the stops listed on the itinerary, as there is not enough time. We only walked a few blocks. Do expect to learn things you did not know. before. Chris is extremely knowledgeable and tries to address the interests of those attending. If you are interested in WWII history, this is for you. I taught history and read a lot, but learned new things that ai have been sharing with others ever since we went on the tour. If you are watching Apple TV's The New Look, this fits in well!

What you say Is real compliment ! especailly appreciate how you mention how I try to adress the interests of my guests
Within this statement lies the one of the most important things upon which I try to run my tours and I will expand on this below to as its he best place to do this
But firstly can I point out for anyone reading this review as it appears on Trip advisor there is a very small but bizzare and important typo !
I have the origianal Viator review through whom Mayda made the booking and for some eason on Trip advisor it says "Do NOT expect to learn things you did not know before" ?!
The NOT should NOT be there , it should say "DO expect to learn things you did not before "
Now I think its pretty obvious from the overall though review that this sentence does not make sense because it is an error but I obviously wanted to point this out!
Now nrxt let me just take the chance to clarify the important issues regrading what we see on the tour and what we are trying to do because this is a good opportunity as Mayda made metion of It
My tours are NOT like others and for good reason which I hope people will understand after reading this
There is no SET or RIGID itinerary and I DO make this very clear at booking and there Is a reason why
Mayda mentioned not seeing all the sites on the "Itinearay" but I need to point out It says VERY clearly at the beggining that the "Inteneray" Is simply a list of SUGGESTED sites and we may indeed NOT see them all but a selection of them depending upon how long my groups or indivduals wish to spend at each site
I may even take people to sites that are NOT listed IF I believe it will be of interest to people on my tour on that day !
So there are times when we do see more sites and times when we don't see as many
But you are NOT missing out trust me, unless you just want a tik list tour More "sites" does NOT equate with more QUALITY or understanding ,In fact its the inverse
Now there are certain sites I always try to see, 5-6 of them because they are essential to the foundation of the story
The reason is this is a HIGH level tour ,not a tik list where you spend 5 -10 minutes at each site then rush on just learning what it was or what happened there
I am flexible and try to allow people to express their personal interests and I answer in depth all their questions without rushing them on
My tours are all small groups , high quality and personable and I keep them flexible as possible within practical limits
One big issue people may not understand, especially If they are used to large grouo highlights tours Is that this is NOT like that at all
There is no one place In Paris you can go to "get "the history of the occuoation , it took place all over a large city and I could start a tour on It in 20 different places and show people 20 different lists of sites and and STILL tell the same story
So Its not about how far we walk unLess people want to spend 2 weeks meeting every day and doing a 4 hr tour to see EVERYTHING, Its about the QULAITY not the QUANTITY of the sites you see and information you are taught
Thats why for this GENERAL tour we meet in area with a group of very significant sites that are close together so there us no need to walk more than a few blocks that Is delibearte Why walk moire than we need as well ?
This is also why I write to EVRYONE before all my group tours to Introduce myself personally, ask them If they do have any particular interests so I know and can make sure to include them and explain how the tour works
I have seen highlights tours on TrIp advisor where you see 20 sites in 3 hours!
This is NOT the same. type of tour!
The Occupation is the HARDEST and MOST CONTOVERSIAL subject to do a tour on in Paris and to do so properly requires a guide with EXPERT knowledge, who understands in great depth a whole range of subjects AND the ability to link them together in the WHOLE bigger context
What I am doing compared to tours where you see HIGHLIGHTS of attractive buildings or places that are not part of a bigger very specific story involving controversial and complicated social lhistory is the equvalent of somone teaching you High school or O level history compared to a somone teaching you Masters degree level history !
And it is HARD , very hard in only 3-4 hours to cover even 4-5 subjects in the detail people need to truly grasp what was going, and WHY which is my aim, not just send them away with a few pictures of buildings and the title of what it was used for and another site off the list !
I hope what I have written helps people
I tell people when I write that I could easily do the whole tour on a SINGLE subject like the Resistance the Holocaust , the Liberation, The apparatus of terror , daily life etc I could In fact do several tours on each induvidual subject
Instead I am trying to give my guests what is essentially a "shortcut" to undertanding the relqtionshp betzeen all these things that i have spent years over 20 years studying but In just a few hours
Thats why for example whilst I cover the Shoah or Holocaust on the General tour It is simply not possible in few hours when I have other important subjects to cover too to go into too great a depth
It needs a dedicated tour to do it justice and if anyone claims they can cover It in anwhere near the time it deserves as part of a general tour then they are NOT telling you the truth I repeat they are not telling the truth
Yes of course we do talk about it as an Important subjet and how it came to be in France when and WHY and ,how it fitted In with the wider context of the German qnd French policy and anti semitism And if my guests ask me deeper questions on thus subject then I am happy to take the time to answer but remember it may take time away from other subjects or places we may visit or talk about on the tour
But It is one amongst several imortant topics And the flexiibility I want to give means ,the reality Is i can become the victim of my own knowledge becaue people can end up asking some very and deep questions, they may not even realise this themsleves when they ask and I WILL answer becaue I can
This is why I always advise to contact me about a Private tour on the Shoah if they have a very speco=ific interest or the very at least tell me befoe if you are in a grouo tour and I will do my best to include as much as is possible and go a little deeper than normal on the General tour

I have actaully just updated the tour info to reflect how it works as best I can within the paremters of Viators site
I also noticed when doing so that Viator had added some kind of generic tour overview of the tour that I did NOT write or was aware of and contained several glaring innacuracies including sites we do NOT or have ever visited and claiming we end ALL tours in the Marais which has left me non plussed as this has NEVER been true !
The only time we guarantee to end in the Maris is on Private tours on the Shoah OR If I have a whole group on a General tour who have expressed a desire to learn more about the Shoah in greater depth , and we have by PREVIOUS arrangement in ADVANCE modified things
So I am sure that I have had people join my tour expecting this having been misled by Viator and THEN felt we "haven't visited all the sites "
The reality Is to do what Vator claimed in their "Tour Overview" would require over SIX hours , basically TWO tours
So I hope this has now been modified but this is why I must reiterate it is important to carefully read ALL the relevant information not just scan the top lines and "Tour overview " when making a booking and contact me if you have any questions or to clarify which I will be happy to do to make sure the tour us as good an experience as possible for you and your expectations are correct

Chris is a wealth of knowledge! He share a perspective of Nazi occupation that we had not heard before despite our readings and discussions on WWII before. Very interesting to hear about the participation of the French Police that was “hidden” for years. My only issue was how little we walked in the 3+ hours. . It was difficult to stand in one place for such a long time. He would be better offering a “salon like” discussion with tea once you visit the few locations during the tour. He also should take “ breathers” so attendees can sit and ask questions. You feel as if you are interrupting him since he is so full of knowledge but don’t hesitate to do that since he is very open to it.

Thank you for the feedback too so let me address the points as I should to clarify certain things
Re the amount of walking, this actually varies from tour to tour depending on the guests as much as me as It is a function of the time they want to spend at various sites and the amount of questions they ask
I do make this clear to people before a tour
The other option if people just want to learn less but walk more is that I ditch my flexibility , take less questions and move people from site to site with less information and be less approachable ?
I always write to people before to explain this and that my tours are NOT about generic, all the same and a fixed clock watching itinerary where we are just visiting a list of buildings and briefly giving people a few facts like on large group generic tours many companies run
They are flexible and as a result we can end up spending MORE time at certain sites than others and walk far less IF people have a particular interest in certain subject and have a multiple questions Buy yes this can then mean if this happens we spend longe standing at certain sites and less walking
Basically we can't do BOTH , i can reduce the QUALITY of the tour if you want and increase quantity but not keep the quality and increase quantity of walking without adding anither 2 hours to the tour!
In a way I guess I am a victim here sometimes of my own passion, expertise and depth of knowledge in that because i am ABLE to discuss SO MANY subjects in such depth and go down rabbit holes if people want then but then as a result yes sometimes we can spend a lot longer than planned STANDING at certain sites and physically walk less than on other tours
But THIS Is only because I am answering PEOPLES questions In the depth I think they need to know to fully understand WHY something happened or people behaved the way they did not just where and when
If people ask me a lot if questions then we WILL spend more time standing in the place they ask them!
And you did , which is great but It will mean we can't BOTH walk to MORE sites AND stop longer at sites whilst I answer questions that requires time to explain properly in 3 hrs or so
As i say to people when I write if you just want to walk around and look at a list of buildings with set generic script and a guide who cannot answer your questions in any depth then this is NOT the tour you will experience
So on the tour you did ask a few questions, several about the Holocaust which I needed to answer which were quite complex subjects
I love doing this BUT It will mean we will spend longer standing in certain places and walk less overall as we have limited time to fit everything In
The fact Is I could eaily run a seperate 3+ hour tour on EACH individual subject we cover on the general tour! And I do offer this on Private tours
Also Unfortunately Paris is not bench or seat friendly place in many of the outdoor areas we visit so there's little I can do about that but I always go out of my way to position us somewhere people can sit If possible if they need to
I don't think I told you but I have even carried a stool on the tour with me sometimes when people have told me before that one of their group may have problems standing So I am very aware of this and try my best to mitigate It !
I must say though I don't quite understand the point about offering specific "breathers" On just a 3 hr tour where people can sit and ask questions
People can already ask questions and do ask questions all the time at every stop and I try to make sure where possible there is somewhere to sit
I encourage It as you actually mention but to take repeated stops on a 3 hr walking tour in ADDITION JUST to sit and ask questions is both impractical because there arent always the places to sit and also as we are already having to fit so much in to a few hours then we would do even LESS walking than you did on your tour!
Finally Re Salon discussion well I actually already do on may tours and I LOVE doing that If people WANT to spend some time walking and some In cafe chatting or listening instead to me talk about a subject/subjects
Again I am flexible
And we could have done exactly this on your tour but no body asked, or expressed a desire too In fact I always ask and I asked several times during the tour If people WERE ok and needed a break but no one said yes !?
In fact the previous tour I did just 48 hours before we did just this because people wanted to , we spent 3.5 hrs and the final hour was spent in a cafe discussing several subjects because thats what people wanted to doi and when I suggested we did and everyine liked the idea
So in fact we can always do just that and often do, but we just didnt do this on your tour because depsite me asking nobody expressed at any time on the tour a desire to do

Chris provided us with an outstanding tour. He was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic telling numerous stories about the roles and activities of lots of individuals (both famous and not famous). There were four of us in our group and we all learned a lot and found him quite entertaining. We all went into the tour feeling somewhat knowledgeable about the time period. Turns out that we knew less than we thought. He was great!

We took a private tour with Chris two weeks ago and I would highly recommend this tour and our tour guide. Chris is truly passionate and knowledgeable about history and will customize this tour to meet your level and areas of interest and meets you at your level of knowledge. We came into the tour not knowing much about the occupation and the backstory of France’s sociopolitical status before the war and why that lead to the collaboration and occupation. It was a truly fascinating and informative few hours. If you’re in to WW2 history, don’t miss it.

We booked this tour as part of our trip to Paris because we were interested in the history of Paris and the occupation during WWII. We were fortunate to be able to book a private tour.
Our tour guide, Chris, reached out to us before we even arrived in Paris to ask what our specific interest was if any and further, what we knew of the occupation and where did we learn aspects of the occupation whether from schooling, history books, movies or a combination. He further asked if we were going to visit Normandy (Juneau beach) during our visit.
The day before our tour, he reached out again to go over details and the weather and also if we had any concerns. I mentioned my wife was having issues with her knees and he offered to bring a small stool she could sit on for a break when needed. This proved to be a godsend!
Chris met us at our hotel and was enthusiastic and genuinely happy to greet us and welcome us to Paris. Off we went!
As we leisurely walked to our first stop on the itinerary, Chris’ knowledge and passion for the topic quickly became evident. As we walked, he took out newspaper clippings, maps, pictures of relevant characters in history from what seemed a bottomless satchel.
Chris spoke of how the occupation began, how the local people came to turn on each other, how the underground began, how the invading army used Paris to rest their troops, how the jews were treated, how the ethnic “cleansing” began, plots against Hitler’s life, the role of local bakeries, DeGaulle’s influence, the role of The Ritz Hotel and as requested, showed us evidence of gunfire damage in some areas of the city near l’Arche de Triomphe. Finally, Chris concluded with more stories and evidence of how the occupation ended and what remains.
We have taken many tours over the years. When you get a tour guide that knows his/her stuff, lives and breathes it, loves the topic and is a student of the subject matter, their passion is infectious. Chris is that kind of passionate witness to the history of the occupation of Paris.
Barbara and I will ever remember our 7 short hours with Chris. Thanks to Chris, he has awakened in us a need to visit other sites and areas of historical importance. He’s sent us many links to topics he’s spoken of and encouraged us to further investigate on our own.
I wish we could have spent a week or more with Chris. His passion is infectious. When we go back to Paris, we WILL book this again as long as we can spend time with Chris!
