We recommend this walk for some exercise with beautiful vistas.  Once you leave the carpark and start heading to the lookouts, the terrain can get challenging in places (such as some steep steps, low rocky areas where you need to watch your footing, and a bit of hiking here and there), so this walk is not recommended for the elderly, strollers or wheelchairs.  Having said that, you will be rewarded with postcard-worthy views over Mt Coolangatta, Seven Mile Beach, and beyond. The return walk from the carpark took us approx 25 mins at a comfortable walking rate. The boarded-up lighthouse has seen better days, but I hear the locals are rallying for it to be restored to its original condition. This would help attract more tourism.

Travel tip:  After exploring the lighthouse headland, we drove to nearby Crookhaven Heads Boat Ramp.  The views when looking back at the Crookhaven Lighthouse headland as we drove along Orama Crescent were really stunning.

There is quite a straightforward walk of only 10 minutes or so from the carpark to the old lighthouse, which is certainly the most vertically challenged lighthouse I have ever visited. Note though that the track can be uneven and also quite steep in parts; it is not suited to those who might have mobility issues. There is a small bridge to access the headland, which does not completely span the slippery rocks, wet sand and high tides. It's one place to be especially careful. The reward for the hike - sublime coastal views to the north and Seven Mile Beach and fantastic panoramas of the deep blue ocean too. Bonus sighting may be a pod of dolphins.

Looking for a quick walk and not afraid of steps ... pretty walk up to the now disused Crookhaven Lighthouse. Overlooking the rocks at low tide, clear views from Orient Point, Greenwall Point, Seven Mile Beach through to Penguin Head. Lots of rock fishing happening during low tide ...hope they were biting!

It was an interesting short walk through bush, over grassland and rocks. 10-15 min walk from car park. The light house was the shorted light house I’d even seen. Small house with viewing platform/lighthouse on roof. The view and walk were good.

gorgeous spot with a relatively easy walking track - some steps with no handrails. The actual lighthouse is so bad!! Very disappointing as just a pole with a light which gave us a good giggle but very good views from there and fun to explore around the little island

We walked from the other end of Penguin Head Rd, along the road there and back along the beach. All up it was about a two hour walk, roughly 10km.

The lighthouse isn’t much to look at but the views up there and aLong the way are lovely.

Most of the walk is flat apart from the last bit from where the road ends. Not too many stairs but some of them are a bit steep and if you’re unsteady on your feet, make sure you’ve got a walking stick or a companion 😊

This a great walk. It is short and scenic with great points to stop and look at the waves or spot dolphins.
Dogs are welcome on a leash. There are also picnic tables by the car park with great views.
Worth a visit particularly if you are new to the area.

My partner and I took our 10 month old out to the headland. I had never been there before but my partner use to live in the area and suggested rather than walking to the lighthouse, going around on the rocks of the headland.
Well if you choose to do this definitely be mindful of your child's age, weather conditions, tide, appropriate shoes, and risk factors of the rocks. As climbing across the rocks on the east side can be done but not with a child.

This is an easy walk - just a few steps down to get there, then back up - on a lovely little headland. Could do it on its own (only need 45 minutes max, unless you want to take your time), or combine with a walk along the beach and/or river for a longer coastal hike.

I was somewhat disappointed to read the reviews here as they relate to the condition of the Lighthouse. As a teenager in the mid 1960's I was very familiar with the lighthouse and its history. One of my best mates was the son of the then "Lighthouse Keeper". On many occasions we used to go over the isthmus and play around the light and indeed go up into the area where the light and glass lantern were still intact. It has almost certainly gone now, but behind the Keeper's house was a garage like structure called the "Rocket Shed". Inside was all the equipment required to conduct rescue operations should a vessel founder on the Headland......... thank heavens for memories.
