Gorgeous small ruined hall that runs alongside a small river. Stunning location, I can imagine this is a beautiful place to visit in the summer, take a dip, have a picnic. Free, parking 5 mins away down the lane (not a lot though).
Sits alongside a pretty church that's also worth a look.

Saturday 4 September 2021, My husband and I took our friend Jackie to visit Minster Lovell Hall in the pretty village of Minster Lovell.

Minster Lovell is a lovely village on the river Windrush, with a 15th century bridge and an inn, The Old Swan, which is over 500 years old. Across the fields lie the romantic ruins of a medieval manor house Minster Lovell Hall.

The ruins of Minster Lovell Hall are those of a manor house built in the first half of the 15th century by William 7th Baron on Tichmarsh. It was the second house to occupy the site, which had belonged to the Lovell’s since the 12th century. The buildings of the manor house were arranged around a quadrangle, which on the south side was open to the river Windrush.

The principal remains are the great hall with its entrance porch and south west tower beside the river.

We spent the late afternoon here, we even walked beside the lovely River Windrush, we spent over two hours here in this beautiful place before we started our journey back home. It was so peaceful and very tranquil and far away from the madness of he city.

If you want a place of peace away from all the hustle and bustle then this is a place to visit.

Minster Lovell has three distinct areas; ‘Little Minster’ which we didn’t explore, ‘New Minster’ which is on, and south, of the Burford Road (B4047), and also a much more ancient ‘Old Minster’. The latter is an attractive rural area to the north of the Burford Road down in the River Windrush valley, which is the original village dating from Saxon times. This is a hugely attractive area with thatched cottages, a lovely looking pub, and a narrow lane leading up to Crawley and the northern part of Witney.

We explored by driving up the narrow lane but we baulked at a sign, which warned us of a narrow road with no passing places. We were aiming to visit the Freedom of The Press Winery which was further up this narrow lane: but on checking the website we saw that it was closed until much later in the day. At that point we could have easily turned around, but it was possible to park, and we had noted that other visitors were walking off from their parked cars. There was a sign pointing to a church (but nothing else). It was, however, obviously quite popular from the people parked-up there. So, we also parked, and followed an even narrower access road on foot which led us to St. Kenelm’s Church.

As we walked around the church there seemed to be more people than you would normally expect to encounter visiting a very old but fairly typical church on a weekday. Then as we reached the area behind the church we found the reason why. There, almost unannounced was Minster Lovell Hall. The sign, mentioned above, made no mention of the ruins of this extensive 15th Century Manor House and associated buildings like the Dovecote (which remains intact).

We spend a good 45 minutes looking around and marvelling at the scale of the buildings and reading the information signs that evidenced an illustrious history of association with the wealthy and powerful.

This National Heritage site is well worth a visit, if you have even the slightest of interest in the remnants of a local culture that goes back nearly 600 years.

Beautiful location for a walk or a picnic by the river. Parking is limited but there is a small car park (free) at the top of the lane that leads to the church.

Minster Lovell is a nice place to walk and look around though parking is not ample. The Hall is an easy walk open to the public behind a historic church. A small donation is requested though the site is unmanned. It is an English Heritage site. It’s right on the water and it would be a nice place to picnic in good weather. Our kids enjoyed running through the different rooms and looking around.

Came across this church when finding places to visit. Totally surprised to stumble across the old Manor ruin behind the church. Beautiful landscape with river and great picnic spots. The lovely cottages and warm and friendly pub at the end of the road, where we ended our visit. Totally recommend visiting if in the area.
