I visited this free museum with my mum who is 87. It was a short walk (about 15 minutes) from Richmond train station and easy to find (at the end of the main road is a Waterstones bookstore and the museum is on the opposite side of the road close to that). Although there is a lift, mum likes to keep active and so we used the stairs. There was a temporary exhibition about the poppy factory which was well laid out: comprehensive and with clear text. A lot of effort has obviously gone into curating this small local museum which is laid out chronologically, and with a lot to see. It was lovely to find mum sitting at one of the exhibits, listening and watching a film about the Richmond in the war years. We have visited so many other museums and galleries where there has been inadequate seating so this was very welcome (not just for mum but for me also). There is a central corridor with exhibits in small alcoves to each side, all are well lit. I spend many hours drawing in museums, trying to capture their collections, and I good lighting and clear text really helps. In every museum and gallery I visit I always look to see in what ways the curators have worked to bring their collection to life and to engage visitors. Richmond Museum must be commended for their two wonderful activity packs called 'Digital Detox Activity Booklet's. I bought two: 'Starry. Starry Night' and 'The Planets' about the Kings Observatory (a venue close by). Although these are not specific to the Museum of Richmond's collection, a great deal of thought has gone into these and I felt that £4 each was a very reasonable price. It lifts my heart to find things like this and I wish more museums and galleries would go to the same effort. On leaving, I was happy to give a donation. The museum is less than a minute's walk from the river front and we enjoyed a walk there. (If you turn right when you get to the river, after about 15 minute sthere is another right turn and a small pub with both indoor and outdoor seating).

The Museum of Richmond is housed on the second floor of what was once Richmond’s Town Hall. On the first floor is a reference library and toilets which were today out of order; on the ground floor the two small rooms which comprise the Riverside Gallery currently displaying an excellent exhibition of works by some of the members of Richmond Printmakers. Judging by those chosen to exhibit most of them are women and assist in explaining the multifarious techniques involved in printmaking itself. I particularly liked the saucy linocuts of Sue Ribbans and the exercise prints of that saintly sounding cross-dressing Eileen St. John.

Lots to look at and study in the display cabinets particularly the model of old Richmond Palace. A good outline of the history of Richmond. Also excellent videos of the buildings for anyone interested in architecture. Good , to then try spotting the different buildings and their style of construction while exploring the town and its surroundings. All the displays are well presented and objects chosen with care. A number of the local characters who lived through either of the two World Wars are also made vivid by the recollections of those who knew them. Staff helpful and keen.

The museum does present a history of the town but in a form that is difficult to follow. The exhibits are cramped into a small space and are poorly presented.
The museum is housed on the second (attic} floor that can be reached either by stairs [difficult to manoeuvre between first and second floor] or by a lift. The lift was not working on the day we were there.

Dear Keith, We are sorry that you found your visit disappointing. We are an independent charity trying to make the best of the space that we have. We are hoping to redisplay the galleries and if you have any suggestions on how we can improve we would love to hear them. Please get in touch by emailing us with your ideas: info@museumofrichmond.com We have been having some troubles with the lift for a while as the Council, who run the building, are having trouble with the contractor who is supposed to be maintaining it. We are hoping it will be back in action soon. Best wishes, The Museum Team

A small but delightful museum run by a charitable trust. It provides a fascinating insight into the varied and interesting history of Richmond, including its Tudor heyday with a favoured royal residence. Special exhibitions are set up every few months, professionally designed to a high standard. The current exhibition commemorates 800 years of St Mary Magdalene's church, and ties in with events and displays in the church. The staff and volunteers make the most of the space on the second floor of the Old Town Hall, but the Museum deserves a site with direct access from street level, which would raise its profile and bring in more visitors.

This is a very interesting museum located on the second floor of the town hall. There is a small temporary exhibition on gunpowder mills in nearby Isleworth. The permanent exhibition thankfully has little on pre-history and instead focusses mainly from the fourteenth to twentieth centuries. There is a lot on royalty as well as architecture with some very informative videos. You can easily spend an hour here as it is an excellent example of a local museum.

Won't take long, but well worth a look. Lovely little local museum. Good range of history, from neolithic to 20th century.

Pretty interesting little museum and enjoyed the history exhibition of Richmond.

It was free admission but one can make a donation if they enjoyed the exhibit.

They also need volunteers so it would be nice to help them out.

Located near the river and pleasant setting as well as location.

Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Museum is small but very good. We went with the local playgroup so there were activities for the children.
