We were thankful we were in the area on a Bank Holiday Monday as the railway is run by volunteers and only open on certain days. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Our boys aged 2 and 4 both enjoyed the rides. I would recommend doing the branch line down to the quarry first as it is much shorter than the mainline. There was a man in the quarry giving talks about the fossils, rocks etc. He seemed very knowledgeable, but our boys wanted to ride the train, so we didn't stay, but other people seemed impressed and interested by what he had to say. There was also a talk at the end of the mainline which was also interesting and informative.

This is easily found, there’s good signage to it and it’s near Carsington Water.
You can also reach on foot it from The National Stone Centre an easy half mile walk away.
The trains are really quaint and you get 2 trips in different directions. The first trip is up a huge incline, the second visits the quarries.
At each there is a short informative talk from one of the volunteers.
All the volunteer staff were very nice and easy to talk to.
Well worth a visit.

Excellent few hours enjoyed here with my 9 year old daughter. The staff were very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and went above and beyond offering my daughter a drive of a mini locomotive which she LOVED!! cheap tickets, snacks & free parking - just get there before lunch to get a spot. My daughter also found the fossil talk fascinating so thanks for that also.

What a fantastic little gem. Delighted to be able to visit after all the issues with the rockfall and flooding.
Very enjoyable run on the ‘main line’ compounded by the local and historical information from the driver and guard.
The short run on the quarry ‘branch’ was a real bonus with a very interesting and knowledgeable presentation on the geology.
The volunteers were all very friendly and welcoming - a real delight.
If you are interested in our industrial heritage, this is an absolute must in a wonderful setting.

We popped into the Steeple Grange railway on our journey up north and it was a very pleasant surprise. It is only a small railway but the volunteers are so enthusiastic and informative. We did two small trips on the railway and were treated to a lot of information on the industry of the area, and information on the many fossils found there also some examples. Well done to the volunteers.

Although it poured down with rain the entire time we were there, myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed our time here so don't let the weather stop you! The volunteers/staff were both very friendly and knowledgeable and clearly loved what they were doing. The fossil talk was a particular surprise as i learnt so much in so little time. I would go so far as to put this (alongside the nearby Stone Centre) as a must do attraction for those new to Derbyshire or, like me, have lived here all their lives but ashamedly have been missing out on what their county has to offer!

We were walking past the light railway when we were entreated to come in and take a ride. It was an unexpected ambush but had an enjoyable hour or so and are glad we stopped. The railway is a former standard gauge line serving local quarries which closed a number of years ago. Now it is a small, volunteer run railway that takes you first into the edge of the quarry and explains some of the fossils found there which was interesting. Then we travelled about a mile or so to the terminus (Middleton) and back. This line has some interesting history about the area and the volunteers are very pleased to share their knowledge and passion. You can buy a coffee and cake, cold drinks are also available.

Fantastic afternoon spent at the SGLR .justed pop through the wall from the high peak trail into the railway yard..
You are greeted by an enthusiastic dedicated bunch whom want to pass on the wonderfull world of railway and how much it has meant to us and impacted on all our lives.
Not just for railway buffs but fascinating insight to the workings of engines..rolling stock ..various furniture and track and how they fitted into landscape where they worked.they were the cutting edge tools of the day having been in use for hundreds of years.
Consisting of the railway station..yard and buildings.

Next being the track (18inch track )a ride down (On "peggy") to the quarry ..an ancient 330million year old tropical lagoon that was actually where the north African/meditarean coast is now ..and moved by tectonic plate movement to just outside Workswirth!

A colleague show you the hidden fossils in the abandon slabs of rock of limestone ..laid down and that encapsulated the various sea creatures..crustasion ..and plant life ..fascinating. a ride back up .
Then a wait at the platform next to the engine house ..for "greenbat" an engine and carriages to take you up a 1 in 27 incline cut into through the rock up to Middleton ..a lovely ride through nature .
To think this was the way some of the highest quality limestone in the world came down from the other quarries higher up ..being shipped all over the world .. for hundreds of year. With out realising it we have seen monuments.. catherdral ..stately homes and the haunting sites of most world war one commonwealth graves commonly found in northern France...row upon row ...starting there journey onwards down this railway....
So much more to see and learn from this wonderfull railway set in lovely surrounding ..run by volunteers ....every penny spent goes on restoration and the future track extension planned as money allows .we look forward to that with much anticipation.
Many thanks go out to all the crew .a most memorable day.

Many thanks...much appreciation of the hard work and effort into maintenance

This delightful little 18 inch narrow gauge railway is laid on part of the trackbed of the eerily named Killers’ Branch of the historic Cromford and High Peak Railway which opened in 1830.

As a teenager, I was lucky enough to have had several (unofficial) footplate rides on the Sheep Pasture to Middleton section of the C&HPR when it was still an operational BR line, but I did not travel on the Killers’ Branch which served the Hopton Wood and Middleton stone quarries. In days gone by the quarries were owned by the Killer brothers who had paid for the branch to be built, hence the sinister name. Hopton Wood stone has been used on many iconic buildings including the Houses of Parliament, the Albert Memorial and the Bank of England. More poignantly, after WW1, the Hopton Wood Stone Company produced over 120,000 headstones for the Imperial War Graves Commission and these memorials would have begun the long journey to the cemeteries in France down the 1 in 27 incline of the branch.

The branch was one of the last parts of the C&HPR to close in 1967. The trackbed of the line from Cromford Wharf to Parsley Hay was subsequently bought by Derbyshire County Council and converted into the High Peak Trail. In 1985 a group of enthusiasts formed the Steeple Grange Light Railway with the object of building an 18 inch narrow gauge railway on the derelict and overgrown Killers’ Branch trackbed. Slowly, but surely, that aim is being achieved as they are now just a few yards short of their target at Middleton where they plan to build a station with access from the main road (B5023) through the village.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. For a start I was really impressed by the friendliness, enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers. OK, it is a short ride in a former colliery man-rider and a far cry from a heritage line such as the North Yorkshire Moors, but for me it was certainly no less enjoyable particularly because of the pride that the volunteers have in their little line and their achievements.

For those interested in geology a separate short branch line takes you into a disused quarry where a volunteer (who is a qualified geologist) explains the properties of the local limestone.
