Another pretty spot on the north shore with views of the city and the harbour bridge is Balls Head Reserve. It has picnic tables, toilets and water and is well signposted. Aside from the harbour view walk there are a number of gentle bushwalks in this area which would probably only take an hour. One of the bushwalks leads to the Coal Loader Centre for sustainability which is worth a visit.

This area also has Waverton Park, Carradah Park with Berrys Bay lookout and foreshore walks which would be good to visit at the same time. There are good views from there too. I think the views from Blues Point Reserve are better but I liked the natural bushland here.

As far as I could tell, Balls Head is not that well known but it is close to the city and a short train ride to Waverton and a stroll from there. The bush was natural and you get excellent views of the CBD, Bridge and Opera house and when visited there were few people.. It was also a pleasant walk with nature. There was also the Coal Loader, a controversial development in the 1920's that transferred coal from large carriers to small ones that operated for 70 yearsin a pristine bush environment.

I sometimes used to walk to Balls Head when I was working at North Sydney a few years ago. It was a pleasant quiet destination on a weekday. The view of the Bridge, city and harbour are fabulous.

Maybe it's because of the lockdown but there were plenty of people here (on a Sunday) getting some exercise, admiring the view and enjoying the natural bushland.

North Sydney Council have obviously done a lot of work improving the area since the last time I was here. They have improved the walking tracks, added signage and installed picnic areas. Well done.

Some of the walking tracks are still a little rough but that's not surprising for a bushwalk.

The best improvement is the viewing platform above the coal loader. Wow! Such a large area with great views. Very impressive. Well worth visiting.

Make sure you walk through the coal loader tunnels too.

I love history and nearby is the old coal loader and BP storage tank facility. Easy walking access to the area and lovely views of the city as well. The coal loader has lots of new signs explaining the history about the site. You can walk through a tunnel that was used to off load the coal onto a small wagon to be loaded onto a conveyor belt to load onto ships. Nice walk through the bush land to Balls head itself. Place is so quite not many tourists seem to know it’s there. Get off at waverton station, better to get there by train.

With beautiful views of the harbour and good tracks for hiking, a lovely spot. Shady trees and relatively unspoilt harbourside setting.

For a pleasant coastal walk, this is a lovely place to be. Well laid out paths to follow and the harbour to view. All rather enjoyable.

Balls Head Reserve is a hidden Gem in the city! In fact it's relatively close to where we live, but have not known about it until finding it by chance! The views are exceptional and the bonus is that those visitors who so wish can find a seat or two and have a picnic, while at the same time making full use of the limited BBQ facilities available. Go early and you will probably be lucky. You can either drive or catch public transport. Waverton train station is about ten minutes walk from there.

Haven't visited for about 6 years, and found this excellent location, little changed. Fantastic for that getaway within Sydney, without having to drive too far. Has limited BBQ facilities (4 hotplates only), but has public facilities relatively clean and in good condition, however, the views are all million dollar! Right opposite Goat Island, with the Bridge and Opera House to the left, and Pier 1 to 7 in front, Barangaroo, and Darling Harbour all laid out before you.
At the entrance, you'll also find a completely redeveloped old "shipyard" area with interesting solar panels providing shaded area, local garden beds of veggies, and the very old wooden wharf...must be at least 100yo.
Great place to explore and spend a few hours or even a day. A walking track takes you to the waters edge in some part, though a lot has been cordoned off to preserve the foreshore environment now.

Around 10 minutes walk from Waverton Station, Balls Head Reserve is just a few stops on the train from the city centre. Alternatively if you're fairly active its less than an hour's walk from the city across the harbour bridge.

There's some great views of the harbour and enjoyable short bush trails round the reserve headland.

Tip, be sure to checkout the old coal loader facility nearby when you're in the area. A fasinating insight into Sydney harbour's industrial past.

There are trails and tracks around the foreshores of Balls Head Reserve. Can be slippery if wet. A fun exploratory place for adventurous kids.
