Quartier: Chapel Street

Unfortunately construction and inept detour signposting leaves you in the middle of Abbotsford and on the busiest and most dangerous road for cyclists in Melbourne … Hoddle Street.
It’s been this way for over 6 months.
A message to Parks Victoria …..
PLEASE WALK OVER THE DETOUR PATH AND SIGNPOST IT ADEQUATELY

Whether you walk, cycle, hike or mountain bike, the Capital City Trai is a great way to see inner city Melbourne. The Trail forms a loop around the center of the City. It's 18 miles (30km) from the start in Southbank and back again. The Yarra Bend Park has a vast collection of waterbirds. The Inner City Trail treks through Melbourne's inner city. There are many things to see, it's best to work out a schedule, according to how you want to spend your day.

A lovely walk on a fine winters morning beside the Yarra River.
Great to see the rowers from the different clubs out training on the river. Some water birds about and quite a few walkers and bike riders. We walked so far then crossed on a bridge and walked back into the city on the other side of the river. Nice views of the city, sporting venues and gardens as you do the walk. Some nice bridges to see as well.
Worth giving it a go

The Capital City Trail is a hiker-biker track that circumnavigates the city of Melbourne. It takes in the Main Yarra Trail, Merri Creek Trail, the Moonee Creek Trail and the Inner Circle Railway Trail. You will see landmarks such as Melbourne Zoo and Ikon Park, headquarters of the Carlton Football Club. A good starting point is Princes Bridge. The trip is around 29 km (18 miles), it is a good day's outing for cyclists, but a bit far for hikers to walk in one day. You can, however, take the trip a bit at a time. I have taken the trip several times, it is always interesting.

Branching off this Trail between The Royal Park and Jewell railway stations is the Upfield Shared Path for cyclists and pedestrians. With some minor interruptions, this path extends to near Gowrie and is good quality bitumen with some on-road sections. Currently interrupted for level crossing removals between Moreland and Coburg and for housing being built at Jewell station, it is a well used and popular route to the North. It has many useful interconnections with shopping precincts and roads.

A really enjoyable way to see inner Melbourne. Only drawback for pedestrians is when cyclists decide to use it as a racetrack. Leisurely recreational cycling only please.

Walking and cycling are two of the activities that you can still do during this time of social distancing. Today people, dogs, and bikes are in good use in the Royal Park and North Carlton area with people still visiting the nearby parks.

The Capital City Trail is a collection of other trails, which end up in the city of Melbourne. A good starting point is the Merri Creek Trail in Coburg. Eventually it conects up with the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and eventually the Inner Circle Traiil. The trail is dual use -- both cyclist and walkers are welcome. It would be a long hike, however -- it's 29 km (18 miles) from start to finish. Be aware that quite a bit of the trail is quite isolated and if you have an accident, as I did, you might have quite a long walk to get help.

I walked the Trail through Royal Park today. After recent rains the vegetation was lush and green and some of the Spring flowers had come out. Good for walking and cycling, as always.

Fantastic scenery along the Yarra River, Merri Creek and through Docklands. The pathway provides great and enjoyable access into CBD, MCG and Rod Laver Arena. We cycled to Tennis from Abbotsford which was perfect. Unfortunately a lack of suitable signage make it a challenge to find your way on the Merri Creek and Royal Park sections of path.
Stop/start cycling at Abbotsford, Gipps St bridge, no ramp access from river bank to bridge, Fitzroy section with crosses made on both minor roads and some larger roads (St George Rd, Nicholson St and Lygon St). Suitable ramp access for Gipps St bridge is needed, either right of way at road crossing point and or bridge/underpass where required on main roads should be considered to improve connectivity and safety of path users.

Hi, may I know where is the starting point of this trail & where is it end?
I will ride with my own bike. If I take my bike with my car to here, where is the most suitable place to start?
Thanks!

The Capital City Trail starts at Docklands under the Bolte Bridge, next to the Yarra River. It then follows the Moonee Ponds Creek North to Flemington Bridge and then you must cross the bridge over Flemington Road and travel alongside the Upfield railway line until just beyond Royal Park station. The Trail splits from the Upfield Path there and heads East along the old route of the Inner Circle railway line to join the Merri Creek path near Rushall station. You can then go North or South from here or alternatively, join the Capital City Trail here and go the other way. The route is well used and you will meet walkers, cyclists and runners commuting especially in the early morning.
