I'm giving this memorial a 4 star review ahead of the highly anticipated "A Soldier's Journey" which will be installed in September 2024. This 58 foot-long bronze relief portrays the experience of an American soldier in WWI. Right now, there is a banner in place with a picture of the partially completed part of the bonze relief, along with the artist's rendering of what the other half will look like once it's finished. I've looked at videos online showing Sabin Howard's completed sculpture panels. The sculptures already appear as if they are popping out of the wall. It will be amazing at night when it's all lit up.
Currently, it's a mixture of Pershing Park with an incomplete WWI Memorial. The only memorializing is of General Pershing and his victories along with The Belvedere which lists the names of the campaigns on the outer wall. You'll need to walk into this architectural feature to see the WWI Victory Medal. The central view at the top gives you the full picture of the memorial as it was intended. Let's just say that it's not going to look complete until the bronze relief is installed.
We just happened to see it as we were walking down Pennsylvania from our hotel to the National Mall. I didn't even know it was there. There's a really cool inscription from Willa Cather on the steps off of 15th St. "They were mortal, but they were unconquerable" comes from one of her novels. The words are powerful. It speaks a lot to honor and duty. I'd love to see these words lit up at night with the rest of the memorial next time we visit it.

The National World War I Memorial is a memorial in DC dedicated to all the American soldiers lost during the First World War. Unlike many of the more famous memorials, this one is not on the National Mall. I highly recommend visiting this memorial.

The centerpiece isn’t finished yet, but this small memorial across from the Willard is a place for quiet contemplation. I visited once in sun and once in rain—somehow the rainy setting seemed more fitting.

One of the stops on our US History tour was at the World War I Memorial in DC. The centerpieces of the memorial are a large statue in tribute to General of the Armies John J. Pershing, and a mural type statue called “A Soldier’s Journey”. The artwork depicts a young man leaving his wife & daughter to go to war, and the difficult phases of his experience, ending with him coming back home to his family. At the time we were there, the mural statue was not completed, but there was an artists depiction of the unfinished portion. It is scheduled to be completed in 2024. In the memorial are also quotes on the war, maps of battles, a fountain & pool. It is a fitting memorial to the soldiers who fought in this terrible war.

I left the DC area in 2010 and always wondered why there was no site commemorating the First World War. Fortunately that has been rectified and it was good to be able to see this on my most recent visit. It's not the most compelling of our war memorials, but I like the location and layout, and it's well worth a stop.

The National World War I memorial is a "work in progress" and one of the newest memorials in Washington. Surprisingly, until this memorial was established, there has not been a suitable memorial related to World War I in the capital. Perhaps people previously just wanted to forget and in recent years there have been so many wars, people have forgotten "the war to end all wars." In any case, it is only fitting that a proper World War I memorial is now established. The memorial incorporates the existing memorial to Gen. John J. Pershing that was earlier situated at the site, just across from the White House. Further additions to the memorial are planned and expected to be completed in the next year or two.

We discovered this on the way to the White House Visitor Center. Although it has existed as Pershing Park since 1981, it's technically the newest memorial in DC, being officially redesignated the World War I Memorial in 2021. The centerpiece, a bronze relief mural, hasn't yet been installed, but it's still worth a visit.

Great Memorial for our Veterans of WW1. Didn't expect to see such a great memorial and the information and setting are spectacular. Worth stopping and honoring those that served and sacrificed for our country.

This new memorial is almost complete - needing just the installation of the final bronze, as of June 2023. It's very well done, and conveniently located near the White House and the Willard Hotel. Informative signs.

This is the newest addition to the Memorial Mall. The Memorial commemorates the US participation in the World War I and how the US participation determined the end of the war. The battles that were fought and the people who fought them are very well commemorated by this Memorial. It offers you a lot of information and you learn a lot on the American history. It is beautiful during the fall. Every day, at 500 pm, a bugler plays taps at the Memorial. This is unique and moving! It commemorates the greatness of the US!
