This is just one quick stop that you can make while strolling or biking along the Multi-use pathway in Sandy Hook, there's a lot to do and see in this area.

The Bay and the Bay Shore are not only beautiful but historically important. Evacuation Day, November 25, 1783 was the day the British Army left the City of New York and General George Washington officially took possession of the city for the Continental Congress. Roughly a month later, HMS Assistance, part of the British blockading fleet was preparing to leave the colonies for home. A group British sailors decided to remain in the colonies and deserted the ship. It was these deserters that Hamilton Douglas Halyburton and Lt Champion were chasing when they were caught in the storm and perished on Sandy Hook. In some ways this is the last gasp of the Revolutionary War and while this memorial commemorates the friendship between the United States and Great Britain, I am sure that on January 1, 1784 feelings were very different. The site is accessible by car, but parking requires a bit of a walk. Oddly, there is no mention of the identities of the deserters or their fate in any account I have found.

You have to take the multi-purpose trail to see this memorial, but it is worth the walk. This is a little bit of not well known history, but is a part of the history of Sandy Hook. These 14 or so soldiers were lost, not in a battle of armies, but to a battle with nature on Sandy Hook in the month of December, 1783. You can find out more about this event, by going to revolutionarywarnewjersey.com. Once you know the story, the memorial means so much more. It is worth the effort to see.

If you enjoy learning about the America Revolutionary War, then this small memorial with its interesting history is worth stopping to see. I parked our car in the L parking area and took the short walk north on the bike path to check it out. We’ve been coming to Sandy Hook for many years and never realized it was here.

The Halyburton Memorial is easy to miss to look for it on the map before you venture out on the bike path. It is just ok - there is not much to it.

It's a marker that is easy to miss. You can walk or ride right by it - It's about 30 feet to the right of the path. Look for slates crossing the otherwise concrete/asphalt trail. That's the place.

Easy to forget that Central NJ was in the thick of things during the Revolutionary War. Worth the stop to read the plaque and contemplate the sacrifices and losses that were It just how many

The plaque and the historical marker tell the story.

"In January of 1783, as the Revolutionary War was ending, British warships withdrew from New York Harbor. While the warship H.M.S. Assistance was anchored in Sandy Hook Bay, some of her crew deserted and escaped into the salt marshes here. A search party of thirteen men, led by 1st Lieutenant Hamilton Douglas-Halyburton was sent to find them only to get caught in a blizzard and perish. The bodies were buried in a common grave that, some time later, was lost. In 1908, workmen discovered the remains and the British sailors were re-interred at Cyupress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn. The present memorial was erected by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937."

The Memorial is on Hartshorne Drive but more easily reached by the
multi use walking / bike path. A web search for "Halyburton Memorial Sandy Hook,
NJ" results in many interesting English and American sites that give the Halybuton
family history and full historical account form 1783 to the present memorial built in
1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corp.
