Be careful with sending your children to Philmont they will be discriminated against I was very disappointed on how people were treated I should say certainly people were treated when I was there the BSA I thought was a fantastic organization I guess I was wrong

Rory gave us a very nice tour of the Philmont Villa. We learned history of the area and the history of the mansion.

It's a Scouts BSA high adventure camp. If you are not a participant not much to do. You can check out the national scouting museum and the tooth of time trade post and look at the views. You can also tour Phillips old house at certain times. If you are big scouters then it's at least worth it to see.

now I wish I had gone too, see the museum, watch the deer graze on the grounds, and be reminded of how much fun scouting used to be, I still have my dad's 50 mile hiking award, many thins here brought back precious memories, incredible library, and good docents, wish I was in scouts again

Our family has been a scouting family for four generations and our Eagle Scout had the honor to attend Philmont Scout Camp with 4 other of his troop members years ago. He always talked fondly of those memories and the camp's beautiful location. We sadly lost him last year and thought it would be wonderful to stop by and pay a visit while we were in the area. The grounds and museum were amazing and our museum docent was so informative. I'm thankful for the BSA and GSA for the values and opportunities that they continue to give our young people. Thank you!

I was a camper at Philmont over 50 years ago. I wanted to stop by to see what how it was, and show family what an experience I had. The staff was extremely friendly, but being the season not much going on. Enjoyed the stop. Thank you Scouting.

We returned here to the site where my husband backpacked as an Eagle Scout decades ago. While the scars of the Ute fire are still evident there is MUCH beauty to be seen. The grounds of the base camp, museum and mansion are lovely and there is an amazing Trading Post with all sorts of gear and Philmont souvenirs. Lovely and what a service to young scouts and their families!

I did an 11-day, 65 mile trek with my son’s troop in the north area. We got to experience the Valle Vidal, Carson National Forest, climbed Mt Baldie and much more. It is a beautiful area and well worth the time to do the trek. I’d go back in a heart beat if given the chance.

This is a great place with both backcountry and historical buildings related to Kit Carson or the Phillips family. And Native American and early mining sites. Great place

I had a 7 day trek and it was absolutely awesome! I had an amazing time as did the rest of the troop! Only complaint--The dining hall food could be improved a lot!

Will we be missing out by visiting Philmont in the spring rather than summer? My dad went on a Boyscout backpacking trip at Philmont circa 1970. I moved to New Mexico last year, and I want to take my dad to Philmont during an upcoming visit (from Chicago) - he talks about it as a highlight of his youth! However, he is planning his next visit for April. Will it be a let-down to come when only the museum and gift shop are open and it's a bit cold? Should I wait until a summer trip? We won't be hiking due to family health issues.. just want to visit the property and relive memories.
Thanks for any help!

I don't think it's an issue since you aren't hiking. The good part is that there won't be many people there. The museum can get crowded. Plus, it would be neat to see the mountains with a fair amount of snow on them still.

Quick Question...I am an Adult going on the trip and I also run my own business. I may need to be accessible via cell phone for emergencies. Do you know if Verizon has decent cell coverage? We are doing Trek 7. Thank you in advance, can't wait to experience this with my son and out troop.

Basically the higher up you are, the better the phone service. I have Verizon, which was slow at base camp, but received service on Baldy Mtn., in Elkhorn and Santa Clause camps.

It's difficult to get enough adults to commit to 15 days (12 days of Philmont + train travel time from California). Would we really be missing out by going on the 7 day trek?

I feel the experience of 7 days is almost the same as 12 days. i feel it's the rush that one feels in being at Philmont that makes the experience.
