With its wetlands spanning the Rio Grande, this refuge is a magnet for migrating waterfowl. Even visiting in late morning (rather than the most active times, dawn and dusk), we saw huge flocks of sandhill cranes, Canada geese, snow geese, and several species of ducks. We also spotted a family of deer -- three does and a buck, grazing a meadow. The staff and volunteers who keep this habitat so friendly for wildlife and visitors deserve everyone's thanks and support.

We live in South Texas along the "birding trail" and enjoy taking amateur photos. This was our first time to Bosque Del Apache; we were there Nov 14 and Nov 15, prior to the Festival, so the crane population was not yet at the peak, but there were plenty to see and we were not disappointed. The flight deck (just past the fee station/visitor station) was good for the evening return. We returned to the "flight deck" in the morning, before sunrise, for the Snow Geese "blastoff". The deck was not crowded. Afterwards, we drove over to the "Wetlands Roost" to see some of the more solitary cranes wake up and fly off. Unlike the geese, the cranes take off in smaller groups of 3 or four.

The five stars are for the preservation of this unique ecosystem - wetlands in the middle of the desert. Our experience was closer to four stars. We arrived around 10AM and didn't see much wildlife. We saw some red-winged blackbirds and some mule deer. We also were accosted by vicious yellow flies that bite. We spent most of the time in the vehicle with the windows up. Next time, we would research the refuge to determine best times to visit.

We went for the festival of the cranes but there weren't any, there was hardly anything. Went further to the Birds of Bernardo and found everything there. The Bosque was a huge disappointment. Even the usual vendors for the festival were not there. I don't think we will go back. We went every year for the last 8 yrs. Just not the same at all.

We spent several days in the area with friends. Saw an amazing total of birds! Made several drives around the loops. Deer, eagles, geese, cranes and more were present. Hope to visit again in the future. Stop by the visitor center for in-depth information.

Get there in the winter for the snow geese and the cranes. At other times there are wild turkeys, javelinas, deer, elk and always, lots of birds, especialy during migration. Lots of raptors including bald eagles. Then stop off at the Owl Cafe or the Buckhorn Tavern for a great green chili cheesburger,

The simple beauty of this place is well worth it. We visited mid day, so the amount of waterfowl, cranes, and other wildlife was not as high as you would see earlier or later in the day. But don't let that stop you, the Bosque is magical even in the off season. We still saw tons of animals including bald eagles and roadrunner's. Look up, down, and all around...

It was a beautiful refuge. On arrival, we noticed a will boar casually run across the road, it was great :)
The restrooms were very well maintained (even though some were porter).
Unfortunately, we weren't able to see the flock of snow geese landing during sunset where we were waiting but we witnessed the beautiful sunset

This has been on our bucket list for years. We finally made it in December 2022. We were not disappointed. Stayed three nights at a nearby AirBnb. Drove the loop roads multiple times. Saw thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese and Canadian Geese. Also saw bald eagles, golden eagle, Kestrels and several species of hawks. Deer and Javelina were prevalent. We spent a lot of time at several of the boardwalks and viewing areas. We were also able to stop on the edge of the loop roads when birds or wildlife came into view. Folks at the visitor center were amazing resources. We have s National Parks pass so we came and went without hassle. There is also a self pay station at the entrance. Definitely worth our trip.

Can we sleep in our van in the park to be there for early morning bird watching and photography?

Albuquerque International Airport is the closest airport with regularly scheduled service. About 100 miles away.

They have been migrating north in huge flocks - call the Park to see if any still on site
will this wildlife refuge be open Thanksgiving Day, and will there still be plenty of cranes to see once the festival is over?

I'm not sure whether the site is open on major holidays, but the cranes will be there!

Best time of year/day to see the cranes?

Check in with visitor center. We went in November for the annual crane festival (book online) and took a couple of great guided tours with informative guides. The before-dawn commentary and fly out was excellent but very, very cold. In general it was quite cold in a.m.s and p.m.s We wore down jackets, gloves, hats, extra socks and hiking boots. You don't have to book a tour to see it though. The marshy roost area is just up the road from the preserve building and you will see birders gathered there. You can listen to the expert's comments . BTW birders, we saw Aplomado Falcon here too.

I’m not sure I understand when the largest winter fly-ins are visible. Right around sunset? An hour or so before sunset? Can anyone advise?
GusMom99

The largest numbers of birds will fly in from a half hour before sunset to a half hour after. Unlike the flyouts, especially for the Snow Geese, the birds don't come in in huge numbers all at once. Take time to enjoy the leisurely arrivals of multiple smaller flocks.

I will be in the area in mid October, probably in the middle of the day. Is it worth an afternoon visit at this time of year? Anything to see?

This is a very subjective question and any answer will ultimately come down to an opinion that depends very much on ones attitude towards visiting parks and observing nature. However, I can say that (1) Mid October is early in the season for birds, so you wouldn't see nearly as many as you might see a month later and (2) visiting in mid-day you'll miss out on the best opportunites to view the birds before and as they fly out to forage for the day.

I would like to see the morning fly off but don't know specifically where to go. Is it one place on the refuge or multiple?

I agree with the commenters who said to check before at the Visitors' Center. The fly-off areas can vary. When I was there last month, the best place was the first pond on the right on the way to the refuge. One day the birds went to the southern most end inside the refuge. You most likely will see a lot of photographers with their tripods at a good place to be.
