We heard that the mill was not operating because of repairs to the cap and sails, but we went along anyway, and are glad we did.
A very knowledgeable guide gave us some introductory information, and then took us on a tour inside the mill. It was a fascinating insight into the whys and wherefores of a windmill, and some simple but effective demonstrations about the milling process.
A super visit, and we will be sure to come back when it is working again, so that we can see it in operation and buy some of their own milled flour.

Beautiful views. Very friendly people. Lovely little coffee shop. Sails had been removed and being sanded and painted but was still good to see a working windmill. Will go back and do the tour when the sails are on.

Really interesting tour of a beautifully kept piece of local history. Enthusiastically represented by volunteers, you can even buy flour still milled there today!
Nice cheap day out, and lots of hands on demonstrations

Went to visit a Motorbike event earlier today at the Windmill grounds ..
Got a lovely surprise some great classical motorbikes on a glorious sunny morning . Got a double bonus as there were visits to view & learn the history of this incredible piece of history , our guide was fantastic & very knowledgable on giving our party a guided tour , the long history of the flour mill life of a miller & the families who kept this little gem going . Since the late 1700’s Well worth a visit for all ages , young & old as it’s also a working mill , so please support it by buying a bag of fresh milled flour , or just sit & enjoy a coffee or ice cream with the lovely views over the valley . As without it’s amazing dedicated volunteers who help to keep it running for future generations to come . Please go & support them ..

I visited this windmill today and absolutely loved it.
The tour guide was really informative and explained how everything worked and the process of Turning the oats into flour.
The views are fantastic, as the windmill overlooks the village of Heage itself.
I will definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to come put and explore and learn new things.

Visited this lovely Windmill today. Excellent guided tour, very informative and knowledgeable. Hearing the history of the windmill was good, especially how lt has been continuously restored. It does produce flour which you can but in the shop. It’s obvious from the volunteer staff we met today they are passionate about keeping it going. Located in Heage Derbyshire, plenty of parking. Definitely recommend a visit.

Been meaning to go for a while. First day of new season. Fascinating, beautifully presented and incredibly friendly volunteer staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. They even gave us a brilliant local lunch recommendation.

Can you look around the windmill of your own accord or is it guided tours only?

Hi, We operate Guided Tours only with our volunteers. This is due to health and safety legislation as the mill still works and produces flour. The tour is included in the admissions price. Thanks, The Heage Windmill Team
