We used to love dropping by this cafe when walking along the trail and were always delighted by the selection of cakes, scones and pastries. However, the last two visits have been terrible. The first time we gave them the benefit of the doubt, everyone has an off day after all , but the second time confirmed that this place has gone downhill.

The staff were downright rude, there was barely any cakes or pastries on display, most of the scones were burnt and the one I ended up getting (the only one that wasn't burnt) was stale and came without any spread, which has to be requested at an extra cost, but was not offered at the point of purchase.

My husband had a cake which was dry and he said tasted store bought, a far cry from the delicious cakes that used to be on offer. The tables were untidy and the cups and cutlery were not clean... We will not be returning.

We visited the National Stone Centre last week and were fortunate with the weather. It could be a great place but it's the poor relation to the National Slate Centre for example. The signage isn't up to much. We went to the wrong car park first! After a fight with the payment machine in the right car park we then had to find the entrance. Other families asked us if we'd been before but we couldn't help, we explored together!
Finally heading the right way, we came across information boards that were hard to read and trail signs that seemed to peter out.
This place has so much of interest in it. It is a shame that it seems a bit neglected.
The shop is tiny and could do with a bit of inspiration, maybe thinking around the subject, insects, birds, flora, climbing for starters.
There were homemade cakes in the cafe which is always appreciated by this family. The outdoor seating seems to be passed it's best and we chose again as my son was surprised by a wooden bench creaking and moving. There was a 'woven' chair coming apart but still in the cafe area.
The area to the loos and kitchen was really grubby, especially the doors.
It seems mean to post this review when the centre is manned by volunteers but there must be someone who is paid to run the place. They have taken their eye off the ball.
There are excellent and interesting things here that really need celebrating, especially the dry stone walling for me.
I do hope that the national stone centre can up it's game there is so much potential.
Do visit, it's so interesting but you'll have to work at it!

We popped in to the cafe on a Sunday at 3:20 just for a cup of tea. We would have had cake but there was hardly anything left. By 3:45 they were putting chairs on tables around us, so we finished up and went to use the toilet, both the men’s and ladies were shut, and the disabled one was being mopped. An extremely grumpy young man begrudgingly allowed us to use the disabled one. We felt very unwelcome. This cafe used to be thriving with delicious food and friendly staff. It’s just horrible now, and we certainly won’t be back any time soon, despite living locally.

We had a good time with our boys aged 2 and 4. They love picking up stones, so this was an ideal place to visit. There are several sculptures/structures to find on your way round, plenty of information boards and you can do fossil rubbings too. They have the largest collection of regional dry stone walls in the nation. It seems strange to say, but you recognize your local design when you see it next to others! There was a area with smaller stones where you could have a go at making your own walls, or whatever you want to build, which the boys loved. There are some longer walks to/from the National stone center, but we didn't do these with our boys on foot. We didn't do the panning for minerals, but there were some other families doing it.

Lovely place but terrible cafe! £2.50 for a can of Lilt! Very grumpy service. I asked if they had anything dairy free for my daughter with allergies and was just bluntly told "no". Not sure they even looked!

The stone centre itself is excellent. It’s the cafe that let the experience down. It wasn’t busy in there, yet it took 25 minutes to get a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. It used to be brilliant before it was taken over. Some improvement needed.

I was apprehensive about taking three children under 8 years here today but I was pleasantly surprised! We enjoyed the walk round to see the millennium dry stone wall and 3 sculptures. Some of the paths were a little rocky for the pushchair so I'd probably just walk my 2 year old on reins all the way next time instead. The children enjoyed the small but adequate play area with swings, climbing frame, slide and rocking horse. (This isn't shown on their website, but should be). The playground was surrounded by a wall with a gate which really helped prevent our 2-year-old escaping. There was a small bench.

My 7 year old and 5 year old also enjoyed panning for gems, which was a simple activity washing the sand out of a round tray to leave the tiny 'gems' in the bottom to take home in a mini plastic bag. It passed half an hour for £3 a pan and they were pleased with their 'treasures'. The water was fairly shallow and clear so if the gems fell in, you could pick them back out.

The car parking was reasonable, £1.50 for 2 hours or £3 for 4 hours. We chose 4 hours and managed to fill our day, including a short walk round, picnic, play and shop.

The gift shop is small but had a selection of stone gifts and jewelry. The children enjoyed looking at and feeling the selection of mini gemstones ranging from 50p to around £4 each and came home with a couple. The cafe had ample seating indoors and out on a balcony overlooking the play area and valley. Can't comment on the food as only bought lollypops. Toilet facilities were fine with baby changing.

Overall we spent 4 hours there and it only cost me around £10 in total. The children all enjoyed it and my eldest actually said it was the best day ever! I guess it's not how flashy the attraction is, but it's what you make of it! Definitely worth a visit on a sunny day.

I am sure many will see the name and not follow their curiosity. It is a very interesting place with some great walks and views. The Blue Lagoon Cafe is a great find with a good range of food, great tasting hot drinks and lovely staff.

The millenium dry stone wall collection is really interesting and demonstrates a number of different styles from across the country. The display boards are clear and help conjure up a picture of what it might have been like 300million years ago. Lost of picnicing sapce, car parking and east access to the High Peak Trail - itself a great draw.

Well worth a visit! Good for young and old but you do need to be able bodied to make the best of it.

Easy to find. Well signposted. Quite near Carsington Resevoir.
There’s a walk round the perimeter with info on the types of stone and how walls are made in different parts of the country. You can also walk up on to the trail and visit Steeple Grange Light Railway which is only about a half mile walk.
There’s a great art gallery with some quite quirky stuff, this is round the back of the cafe and easily missed.
The cafe is great. Lots of tables inside and out. The coffee and cakes were fab.
Worth a trip. And it’s free.

This week we visited the National Stone centre and it was a really interesting visit.
There are lots of lovely walks in the area and the geo trail with the information given about its history were fascinating. The millennium wall with representations from all the different regions throughtout the UK was also a delight and fascinating how different they are in the different regions.

We though the cafe was excellent value, with good food and the staff were really friendly and helpful.
The facilities on the site were also excellent and there was a great art exhibition to enjoy as well.

It really is an amazing site, especially that it is run overall by volunteers so our thanks go to them for their dedication in keeping it available to us as the general public. Well done!
