We were lucky that the sun shone at Howick on the day we visited . The previous day had had monsoon like rain but the sun came out to highlight the hundreds of snowdrops and other spring flowers that bloom at this time of the year . Our visit finished at the tea rooms , where we indulged in Earl Grey tea , of course , and Northumberland Rarebit , very tasty and filling . It was all very pleasant and we finished off our visit by looking at the exhibition in the Visitor Centre , which is in the ground floor rooms of the main house . A very enjoyable day .

We went along after seeing advertisement for Snowdrop walk. When we arrived the cost was £11.00 for adults £5 for children under twos go free. To be honest for the cost you would be better off going for a walk in the woods. We visit a lot of halls being members of the national trust. Have to say this hall is not worth visiting and is over priced. The hall in which you can view consists of a few rooms not a lot to see. Cafe was small and we were asked to go back after 15 mins to which we did and staff had seated other people that had gone in after us. All round disappointing £37.00 to walk around woodland with small amount of snowdrops which is understandable considering the weather but even so overpriced for what it is.

Thank you for your feedback with your review from your recent trip to Howick. We are sorry that you felt it was not worth the admission fee. There are many thousands of snow drops planted in large drifts throughout the garden which have been stunning this year. The gardens and arboretum, though muddy, cover many acres with visitors loving the space that we have here without ever feeling over crowded. The Earl Grey Tea House is also very popular with our garden visitors, it sounds as though you visited on a very busy day - please be assured your comments will be passed on to them. As a private estate, we try to be as open and honest as we can about what we offer here at Howick, our website is kept up to date with pricing, images and any news about paths closed off. We are sorry we did not meet your expectations on this visit.

The weather forecast was for “ sun” so we decided to visit. Wow, I’ve never seen so many snowdrops. It was stunning. Lots of walks around the gardens. A couple of areas including the bog garden were closed as the ground was wet. Parts were a little muddy in places so I’d recommend boots or wellies at this time of year.
We visited the tea shop, it was busy but we were seated straight away. I’d imagined food choices might be restricted given the time of year but there was lots to choose from. Not expensive.
I’d strongly recommend a visit.

We visited in late-ish autumn, at the end of their open season. (It closes from mid-Nov to late Jan.) The gardens are renown for their spring colour but there was some colour still, including, for example roses.
In places the garden are muddy but there are many paths which offer easy walking, so choose your route according to your footwear, abilities and recent weather. The arboretum is particularly informal and prone to being muddy
Some side areas are seldom visited (not that the gardens are ever busy, as far as I am aware) and have interesting structures and displays

Thank you so much for your 5* review we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to us at the end of the season. The autumn colours are truly spectacular and we even had some snow after we closed, making the gardens look even more spectacular.
We hope we have the opportunity of welcoming you again when we re-open in 2024.

What a lovely place this is. I wish we’d had more time to fully explore the gardens but what we saw was enough to make us want to revisit. The hall itself is steeped in history and is worth visiting just for the wallpaper. There’s also a top notch cafe there serving excellent tea, sandwiches and scones.

Thank you so much for your 5* review, we are so pleased you found us and enjoyed your day. There is so much to see and do here at Howick throughout the seasons, so we do hope you will find the time to revisit. The Chinese Room wallpaper is so beautiful with very characterful birds and stunning flowers and trees. This was reproduced from the original which was hand painted in Beijing in the 1920's. Thank you also for commenting on the Tea House, who offer an excellent array of light lunches and cakes. We look forward to welcoming you again.

The tea shop is one of the best I have ever experienced. Set in the east wing overlooking beautiful gardens the room has stately grandeur. Lunches stopped being served at 2.45pm but we were still able to order cold sandwiches made from the freshest ingredients. This was followed by excellent cake and scone with jam and cream from a selection of perhaps 16. These washed down with Earl Grey although a good range of other drinks were available. Staff were all lovely and friendly. Be aware that an entry fee to the gardens must be paid to gain access to the tea shop, so it is worth making a day of it. The gardens are an arboretum stretching over many acres planted in a naturistic style. Well worth a visit!

Wonderful mix of formal gardens and wooded walks. A great place to get outside and enjoy the nature of Northumberland.
Didn't look at the map in detail before going and was therefore surprised that the advertised "Long Walk" to the sea means you leave the grounds and cannot re-enter at the exit. Instead have to walk along busy main road. Not good. Surely must be some way (pin code) to let people back into the grounds.
Number signs are a good unobtrusive way to show where you are.
Good cafe with excellent selection of home made cakes

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your feedback from your recent visit and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your day with us. The Long Walk, which is a fabulous walk takes you all the way to the sea with the gate at the end only allowing one way access. The coastal path from the gate is part of the King Charles III England Coast Path which if heading North can take you all the way to the Scottish Borders. The coastal path joins the country lane to take you back to our entrance either via Howick Village and the woods or along the road. We are sorry you found the road to be busy, we will discuss what other options are available with the team. We are glad you enjoyed the cakes from the Tea Rooms and hope you will come and visit us again. Many thanks once again for your feedback.

We didn’t walk the entirety of the grounds so I can’t comment on those. What we did see was largely just woodland and we could have been anywhere. I like woodland and nature so it’s not a complaint but I thought it rather overpriced for what we saw. We thought we would be viewing the formal gardens after the woodland walk but it seemed a ‘PRIVATE’ sign had been erected at every entrance to the formal gardens. This left me with the feeling that the owners don’t really want visitors and we are only allowed around the wider estate under sufferance. The signage wasn’t good and not every marker was accurate as per the map. We didn’t visit the visitor centre as there was no sign to it and you can’t enter the house. The lady who saw us into the tea room was a bit short with us. The cake in the tea-room was nice. Couldn’t find any kind of children’s natural play area.

Thank you for your feedback from your recent visit. As you experienced, the beauty of our gardens is the informal and natural style that has been maintained by the family for many years. The borders on the south side of the Hall are more formal aswell as the wild origin garden where there are a selection of more ornamental shrubs. Lady Howick often opens her private garden for visitors to enjoy during the main season. We're sorry it wasn't open on the day of your visit. If you are planning on visiting us again, please let us know and we will check if it is open for you. We hope you managed to visit the hydrangea garden which is looking stunning at the moment together with the bog garden. On the ground floor of the hall is the visitor centre which is open every day from 10.30am to 5pm and has a host of information about the gardens. There is also the old dining room and Chinese room to view and we often have musicians playing for our visitors to enjoy. We feature the musical performances in the kiosk and on our website. The upper floors of the house are not open for the public. We're glad you enjoyed the cake in the Tea Rooms, but sorry to hear you didn't receive the Northumbrian welcome as expected. We hope the grounds lend themselves as a natural place for children to play and have fun as well as the Sensory garden. We often have Ranger Jane on site who offers a whole host of family activities, her dates are noted on our website and social media. We do hope you are able to visit again, please call us beforehand for any further information that we can help with, we look forward to welcoming you.

I'd never been here before and just happened to stumble upon it while looking for places to go while on holiday in Northumberland. And I don't know why it isn't better advertised. It was absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. There was a mixture of everything including an old-fashioned house, formal-ish gardens and woodland. The map is extremely useful, especially for new visitors but everything is well signposted anyway. The cafe is also great. The standard menu is quite basic but there are many specials all the time to change it up a bit and the prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly and helpful and as the grounds are so massive it feels like there aren't many people. My only complaints would be that it was a bit confusing about whether you could enter the house and some of the paths were unclear or quite rough. Definitely not suitable for wheelchair users.

Thank you so much for your feedback, we are so pleased you found us on your visit to Northumberland and hope this will be the first of many visits. As you have seen, we are fairly non commercial and like to keep the gardens in the informal and natural style that was advocated by William Robinson in the late 19th century. We also run guided tours during the main season on a Monday and a Friday, these are led by our wonderful team of volunteers who have so much knowledge on the gardens and hall. We are sorry you found it confusing about the house, the visitor centre is open every day for our visitors, and we hope you managed to visit the Chinese Room and Old Dining Room too? As the rooms can be hired for private parties, they may not have been open on the day you visited. For wheelchair users, we also offer power assisted wheelchairs to hire and provide a further map detailing the paths to follow to keep everyone safe whilst still enjoying the beauty of the gardens. Thank you again for your feedback and look forward to welcoming you again.

Enjoyed a wonderful visit to Howick Hall and Gardens. Would particularly recommend seeing the bog garden, hydrangea garden and sensory garden. The woodland walks are fab too - a little wet in places, so walking boots are recommended! The tea room is beautiful, although we decided to sit outside in the fresh air - scones and Victoria sponge were delicious, and reasonably priced.

Thank you so much for your review, it sounds like you had a lovely day with us and enjoyed the gardens. The rain has caused some of the paths to be a bit soggy, great that you had your walking boots with you. We are so pleased the rain stayed away for you to enjoy your afternoon tea outside, the Earl Grey Tea House offers a great selection of cakes and light lunches. We look forward to welcoming you again.

I think we paid around £14 for 2 of us. That's with a concession for over 60s. It's a beautiful place.

What is accessibility like for a wheelchair user?

Good morning
When we visited there was visitors there in a mobility scooter/wheelchair and we found most of the gardens are wheelchair friendly but obviously there are areas which would be difficult to access due to steps/slight slopes but all in all I would say that most areas are accessible.
A lot of space in between tables in tea room and disabled toilet facilities are available.
The admissions hut before you go into gardens will advise you before you go in

Hello - there seems to have been a misunderstanding about entry fees since you should only have paid £15.40, (or £13.20 for over 60s) for a couple. Please contact us on 01665 577285 and we will try to rectify this.
