The hike is outstanding in its own way. The trail kind of follows the normal motorway from Thusis towards Chiavenna. That's why around 30% of the time you can hear the engines in the distance. However, to me that was part of the experienice. More than I normally I stood still by the the essence of the modern era. I mean I was walking on ancient roads, feeling the heat of the sun and the tiredness of my legs whereas in the distance I heard the cars driving to the top. Who was feeling more worthy? The ones riding in their cars playing music on Spotify or me, confronted by the mointains, drinking water from a mountainstream, wondering about Roman people who'd witnessed the same stones and edges as I was. To me, I was the lucky one.
Morover, the trail is unique in its variety; steep hills. rocks, forests and lakes all are on the Via Spluga. I understood why Goethe fancied this road so much..

...it really depends where you start from, where you end, whether you want to do the whole route or just some of it.
We walked the entire route from Thusis to Chiavenna last week, which took us four days. The route from Thusis to Splugen is really beautiful and while there are a few sections to climb/descend, we didn't find it particularly challenging and it is very well signposted - you can't really get lost!
The annoyance for us was the constant noise of a busy road that stays with you pretty much from Thusis to Splugen. Sometimes you're walking right next to it, crossing over it, walking on top of it at one point, and it crossing over you. If you don't mind the constant hum of traffic, then fine, but it wasn't quite the experience we were expecting - it's not a minor road.
The most spectacular part of the walk is from Splugen to Isola, which is stunning, and it's at Splugen that the main road takes a different turn.
The trip from Isola to Chiavenna was really good in parts, but as we got closer to Chiavenna, the route lost some of its appeal. So if we were to do this route again, what would we do differently? There are many, well posted hiking trails into the mountains around Thusis and Splugen, if we'd have known in advance about the road noise, we would have avoided the via Spluga between Thusis and Splugen and taken a higher route through the mountains to reach our accommodation.

Hello,
I am looking for a Via Spluga guide book or map in English. Does anyone have any recommendations? In the alternative, I am looking for any literature in English on the Via Spluga. My husband and I are planning to hike from Thusis to Chiavenna this coming August.
Thank you for your recommendations!

Hi fellow walkers
I am interested in walking the Via Spluga with 2 friends July next year. As we are all older women we are interested in making it a little easier in terms of assents and day lengths. Basically I would like advice on this. I am looking at perhaps cutting out one or two steep sections by catching the bus. What are the sections that i should definitely not miss. What were everyone's favorite sections?
All ideas appreciated

Hi Chuss,
I just came back from Via Spluga a couple of weeks ago.
It's the most amazing and beautiful hike so I am sure you will enjoy it.
First of all, I am assuming in my answer that you will be walking from Thusis to Chiavenna (some people are walking the opposite direction).
Most of the ascents are on the Swiss side, so that where you'll have to do most of the "cutting", but I must say that the decent in the Cardinello Gorge on the Italian side is very steep, and is one of the most difficult parts of the walk.
On the first leg (Thusis to Andeer) the main attraction is Viamala Gorge.
It's right on the road so theoretically you can get there by bus/taxi.
By walking there are 2 options:
Easy path - "Lost Hole" which goes mainly along the road..
Difficult path - "Via Traversina" which has some ascents.
I took the difficult path which was beautiful. I suggest you'll do the same, and decide after you get to Viamala Gorge whether you want to take the bus straight to Andeer or continue walking.
When you get to Andeer, be sure not to miss the mineral Spa. It's a wonderful end to a hiking day.
On the second leg (Andeer to Splugen), the main attraction is the Roffla Gorge.
Same suggestion as the first leg: walk until Roffla Gorge, and then decide whether to carry on walking or take a bus/taxi.
The 3rd leg (Splugen to Isola) is the most difficult day.
You climb to the Via Spluga pass which is the most difficult climb of the trail, and then decent in the Cardinello Gorge.
We have done it in a most difficult weather (it was rainy, windy, and around 0 degrees Celsius at the pass - I don't know if this kind of weather is possible in July, but if it is, make sure you bring your winter gear).
As for cutting this leg, I've heard that a lot of people are taking the bus from Splugen to the pass, and then just walk down.
From the pass on, it's 99% decent so you won't have to cut anything.
Having said all that, if you are in good shape, it should definitely be possible for you to do it all without any cutting. I've seen older people on the trail.
Just make sure you bring good hiking shoes (very important).
Feel free to ask me if you have more questions.
Enjoy the hike,
Noam.
